The Basenji is prone to kidney problems, progressive retinal atrophy, intestinal, and eye problems. It is important that when contacting a Basenji breeder that you express health concern issues and ask the breeder what they are doing in order to help mimimize them.
Please don't purchase your Basenji from a petstore which commonly are known to support Basenji puppy mills. Doing so only promotes inproper breeding ethics and promotes current Basenji health issues. The AKC, UKC, FCI, CKC, SKC, WWKC, FIC registries recognize the Basenji breed standard.

Country of Origin:
Ancient dogs originating from the Pharoah and Ibizan hounds. The "barkless" dogs of central Africa. Used for hunting they are very shrewd quite catlike in their characteristics. They made excellent hunters as they could outsmart their prey, often humans as well.
Character:
Has a distinctive yodel-like bark. Although very independent, it bonds closely with its family.
Temperment:
Can be trusted with children, but is not a great playmate for them. Must be socialized at a young age so that they can learn that other household pets are not prey.
Coat:
Short, fine dense hair.
Care
Occasionally groom with a coarse rubber brush.
