Country of Origin: Switzerland - Largest and probably oldest of the four Swiss Sennenhunds - Originally used as a draft dog, pulling produce to market. Direct descendents of the Tibetan Mastiff. They drove cattle, protected their masters and even fought in battle. Accepted by Swiss registry in 1910. Introduced to USA in 1968. AKC recognized in 1985.

Character: Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are eager to work, friendly, intelligent, reliable, and protective. They are known for their sociability and obedience. Although they make good watchdogs, their barking is infrequent.

Temperment: This dog gets along well with dogs and other household animals. It makes a wonderful friend for children. It will protect you and your family from any potential wrongdoers.

Coat: Has a thick undercoat, and is straight-haired.

Care Occasional grooming with a rubber brush to remove dead hairs is all that is required.

Colour: Black/tan w/white at toes, tail tip, chest, and blaze

Comments: A peace loving, calm, even-tempered and sturdy dog - Not a roamer, but hates to be tied or confined. Happiest with family. .
